"Las hierbas del camino" discurre suavemente entre los encuentros y desencuentros de los personajes, conflictos narrados con una destreza estructural reservada solo a los verdaderos maestros de la prosa. Partiendo del suspense inicial causado por la misteriosa figura del «hombre sin sombrero», Soseki mezcla sabiamente instantes del monótono presente con pigmentos de la infancia perdida para pintar el retrato del protagonista, un cuadro que, es al fin y al cabo, un autorretrato pesimista, sobrio y angustiado. Considerada unánimemente su obra más autobiográfica, narra la vida de Kenzo, un alter-ego del propio Soseki y con el que comparte hechos vitales trascendentales y marcadas características psicológicas: hijo no deseado de sus padres biológicos, posteriormente adoptado para ser igualmente rechazado por los padres adoptivos; esforzado profesor de Inglés que regresa tras una larga estancia en el extranjero; marido taciturno, hosco y egoísta.
